On July 16, 2026, the 11th Airborne Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) in Alaska inactivated the Army's last active airborne cavalry squadron (1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment) and reflagged it as the 1st Battalion, 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment (1-511th PIR) during a ceremony that historian Jeremy C. Holm was honored to speak at and later provide a history briefing for the Angels of 1-511.

These Arctic Angels are proud to carry on the traditions and legacy of the mighty 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment and to lead the way for future Angels From Hell.

Jeremy's note: I hope that the history of the 511th PIR never forgets just how much CSM Skaggs did to bring the 511th back to activation. Knowing the incredible history of the 511th PIR in World War II and beyond, he worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get this unit change accepted and then he continued his efforts to make it a seamless transition. The 511th is what it is today to a great measure because of CSM Skagg's labors.
