History is made by people, and when those who made that history have passed, that personal memory is lost unless someone had the foresight to record it. Jeremy Holm has done us a great favor in interviewing the surviving veterans of the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 11th Airborne Division in the Pacific. Consequently, he has written from the perspective of the grandson of an officer in that unit assembling their accounts into a single narrative. When Angels Fall provides a detailed human account of life in that airborne regiment from its conception through combat operations on Leyte and Luzon and finally occupation of Japan. A very enjoyable read. This book is a must for anyone interested in airborne operations or the retaking of the Philippine Islands during World War II.
